All Talk and No Action From Schmidt

Press Release

Date: Sept. 14, 2006
Location: Cincinnati, OH
Issues: Immigration

"After years of failing to secure the US-Mexican border, my opponent and the Do Nothing Congress are setting up an election-season political ploy," said Dr. Victoria Wulsin today as Congressional Republicans prepared to bring a bill to the floor that would put a 700 mile fence along the southern border.

"We need to secure our border, but we don't need more empty rhetoric. This Congress and Jean Schmidt have repeatedly failed to provide the adequate funding to protect our southern border and end the influx of illegal immigrants."

In her one year in Congress, Jean Schmidt has voted against securing the border multiple times. She voted:

(1) Against $2.1 billion in enhanced border security funding (HR 5441, Vote #210, 5/25/2006)

(2) Against a Democratic proposal that would have hired more border agents, ended the "catch and release" practice by authorizing 100,000 additional detention beds and incorporated state-of-the art surveillance technology, including cameras, sensors, radar, satellites, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in order to ensure 100% border coverage. (HR 4437, Vote #660, 12/16/2005)

(3) For a $48 million cut to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency, reducing the number of agents on the southern border by 100 (HR 2863, Vote #668)

In 1999, the government prosecuted 182 employers for unlawfully employing immigrants. By 2003, that number had dropped to 4. The government has failed to enforce the laws. "The Administration's record on immigration is pitiful. Americans have had enough of the political posturing and are ready for real results. Once voters elect a new majority in the US House, Congress is finally going to get serious about protecting our nation."
