Tonight, Congressman Steve Pearce came out the clear winner in the Otero County Republican Primary Senatorial Debate. Pearce relied on his strong record of fiscal responsibility, commitment to national security and consistent conservative New Mexico values to address major issues concerning the state. The event, held at the Willie Estrada Community Center, marked the first debate in the race for U.S. Senate.
"I have stood firm and I have stood strong to protect the American taxpayer", said Pearce. "Lower taxes and eliminating wasteful spending are not only good for the national economy, but they are good for our families and small businesses. I have consistently voted to oppose tax increases and will continue to do so."
Questions included topics on immigration, social security and wasteful spending.
"It's not that taxes are too low," he said, "It's that Washington spends too much. "
"I oppose amnesty. If you are in this country illegally, you must go to the back of line behind those who are doing the right thing," he said responding to a question about immigration reform. "But our first responsibility is to secure the border. Washington has not done it's job. We need to enforce the law."
Pearce said we face three great struggles as a nation:
"First, the war on terror must be won - our way of life is at stake. We also face the economic struggle for our industries, our jobs and our careers. And finally, we have deep questions about who we are as a society. I believe our New Mexico conservative values give us the ability to make significant progress for the future."
