Rep. Courtney: Economic News Extremely Troubling
Congressman Joe Courtney issued the following statement in response to the latest economic indicators reported today:
"Today's economic news is extremely troubling and is cause for concern among Connecticut's working families and businesses. The Administration and Congress must build upon the recent economic stimulus package signed into law in February to provide additional relief and an economic turnaround.
"While the economic stimulus package was an important first step, we need to provide greater assistance to those individuals who may lose their job in this period as a result of the economic slowdown. I urge my colleagues to extend the period of eligibility for unemployment benefits and to discuss new measures to serve as a backstop for our business community."
Congressman Courtney supported the economic stimulus package that will put tax-free rebates into the pockets of nearly 95 percent of Americans. Additionally, the Congressman has cosponsored H.R. 4934, the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act of 2008, which would extend for a period of time the benefits an unemployed individual may collect compensation.
