While I recognize our nation's immigration system is broken, I do not support amnesty.
With more than twelve million illegal immigrants in our nation and more arriving every day, the burden on our schools, hospitals and law enforcement agencies is severe. The status quo is unacceptable.
There can be no solution to this problem without first securing our borders. That's why I joined forces with Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) to sponsor legislation that would fund construction of the border fence between Mexico and the United States, hire more border patrol agents, expand detention facilities, and provide more surveillance and other equipment along our borders.
It's also why I have introduced legislation known as the Secure America with Verification and Enforcement Act (Save Act). My legislation provides a three pronged approach to reducing illegal immigration and enforcing current law. First, it would increase the current number of border patrol agents by 8,000 and require new technology to be deployed along our borders to detect illegal immigrants. Second, it provides a common sense, practical way for employers to verify the legal status of their employees and provides stiff penalties for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. Last, it provides the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with the staff and resources it needs to enforce current law. I am committed to working in a bipartisan fashion to pass this legislation to secure our borders.
