ALLARD CHEERS DIRECT HIT ON DISABLED SATELLITE

U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) made the following statement this morning in response to the U.S. Navy's successful destruction of a disabled satellite orbiting about 150 miles above Earth's surface:

"As Co-Chairman of the Congressional Space Power Caucuses, I took a keen interest in the Pentagon's effort to proactively destroy a dead NRO satellite. This satellite could have posed a risk to the global community and I commend the Navy on what appears to have been a successful mission.

"The United States must be conscientious stewards of space, and this decision to avert the potentially unsafe consequences is a demonstration to the world that we take responsibility for the important assets we have deployed in space. It also shows that our investment -- of dollars and time, energy and brainpower - in missile defense has been worthwhile. The United States has developed a new technology and now has new capabilities.

"As space becomes an increasingly important strategic component for many competing nations, it is essential that the United States continues to be the standard-bearer for developing, maintaining, and investing in space technologies. We must lead by example, as space policy decisions have a significant impact on the world's population."
