Barbara Lee's Statement on Senate Passage of Darfur Divestment Bill & Pending House Vote

(Washington, DC) - As the U.S. House gets set to vote on the revised Darfur Divestment bill next week, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (Oakland, CA) issued the following statement:

"I introduced the Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act (HR 180) to target companies whose business in Sudan directly or indirectly supports the genocide in Darfur, which passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.

"I applaud the Senate for responding to the charge to confront the genocide of Darfur and passing the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act.

"I am thrilled the Senate followed suit.

"No one should have to worry that they are supporting genocide, whether it's through their tax dollars or their pension fund. This bill is designed to wash the blood off of our federal contracts, protect the rights of states to divest their own public pension funds from companies doing business in Sudan and increase the financial pressure on Khartoum to end the genocide in Darfur.

"I am optimistic that the House will move swiftly to pass the revised Senate version on Tuesday."
