Boehner Statement Supporting FY 2008 Department of Defense Authorization Bill
House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement supporting the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 1585):
"Our troops fighting to keep America safe and win the Global War on Terror deserve our full support as well as every available resource to carry out their missions. In addition to authorizing funding for necessary body armor, protective vests, armored Humvees, and other equipment, this measure supports our military families for the sacrifices they have made and continue to make for a grateful nation. Now Congress must stop delaying critical appropriations funding and work together to provide our troops with the resources they need.
"I'm particularly pleased that we forced the Majority to remove unnecessary and unconstitutional language that would effectively give the federal government authority to punish American citizens for 'thought crimes' - a concept that has Big Brother written all over it. State and local governments already have laws on the books to punish violent crime against any and all Americans. This language would have taken us down a frightening road where an individual can be punished for having unpopular or politically incorrect thoughts, and it had no place in a bill to support our troops."
