BONO VOTES TO EXPAND CLEAN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY
Seeking to reduce our dependency on foreign oil and expand renewable energy sources, Congresswoman Mary Bono (CA-45) today voted in favor of comprehensive energy legislation (H.R. 6). The bill passed by a vote of 235-181 this evening in the U.S. House of Representatives. Bono, who sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, offered the following statement:
"Our dependence on foreign oil threatens both our national and economic security," said Bono. "To make America energy independent, we must take steps to increase the efficiency of our vehicles, increase production of renewable energy, and expand research and development on clean, alternative sources of fuel.
"This bill takes us in the right direction," Bono said. "It raises fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020, requires that 15 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources, and offers important incentives to boost development and use of alternative energy."
This energy legislation would increase Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards for all new cars and trucks to 35 mpg after 2020. Additionally, the bill expands incentives for the production of vehicles that run on biofuels such as biodiesel.
