STATEMENT OF SENATOR EDWARD M. KENNEDY ON THE 58-39 VOTE ON THE AMENDMENT TO THE GUN LIABILTY BILL THAT WOULD HAVE EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS

This vote sends a clear message to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue that we cannot keep ignoring the needs of Americans displaced by this faltering economy. Strong majorities of the Senate and the House agree we must keep unemployment benefits from running out for jobless Americans. With continued anemic job creation, this is the least we can do. We call on President Bush to join us in supporting much needed assistance for out-of-work Americans.
