ROSKAM JOINS BIPARTISAN EFFORT TO PROHIBIT ILLEGALS FROM OBTAINING DRIVER'S LICENSES
Bill would Create a Federal Standard for Issuing Identification
Washington, Nov 15 - Congressman Peter J. Roskam (R-IL) yesterday partnered with more than 150 Members of Congress from both parties in introducing the Prevention of Unsafe Licensing Act to close a loophole that allows states to issue driver's licenses and identification cards to illegal immigrants.
Roskam issued the following statement:
"Allowing illegal immigrants to obtain drivers licenses moves the ball backwards in stopping the flow of illegal immigration. Congress must work to take away the incentives for illegal immigration, and this legislation is an important step in that direction.
"Issuing driver's licenses to illegals allows states to subvert federal immigration laws. However, current federal law does not explicitly restrict such activity, and this legislation would change that.
"This is yet another necessary step in regaining the trust of the American people while reinforcing the fact that we are a nation of rule and law."
