Matheson Decries Veto of Children's Health Insurance Program Renewal

Washington D.C.—Congressman Jim Matheson released the following statement following the presidential veto of HR 976 - the renewal of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP):

"Every parent in Utah and in this country knows that access to health care and preventive medicine for kids is the right thing to do - morally, economically and politically.

I find it shameful that today, partisan politics appears to have trumped caring for the health and well-being of millions of deserving kids, who—despite the fact that they come from working families, cannot access the health care they need to live healthy and productive lives.

Without SCHIP being reauthorized and expanded, millions of kids, including more than 30,000 in Utah—will have no health insurance and no hope to get health insurance. I hope the bipartisan effort underway today to override the President's veto prevails."
