Sessions Joins King In Introducing Bill To Prohibit Driver's Licenses For Illegal Immigrants

Today, U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-Dallas) joined Ranking Homeland Security Committee Member Peter King (R-NY) in introducing the Prevention of Unsafe Licensing Act (H.R. 4176), legislation that prohibits a state from issuing a driver's license or any identification card to illegal immigrants. Sessions released the following statement:

"Providing illegal immigrants with state-issued driver's licenses would undermine the rule of law, further jeopardize the safety of our nation, and open a gateway for fraud.

"While Senator Hillary Clinton continues a debate with herself on which days are politically expedient to support or oppose identification for illegal immigrants, the American people have spoken loud and clear. Driver's licenses for illegal immigrants would not only reward illegal behavior, but would expand the failed policies the 9/11 hijackers exploited to obtain 28 state-issued identification documents.

"The federal government has the responsibility to enforce federal law and protect our nation, and I am pleased to join Congressman King in introducing common-sense legislation that brings our nation one step closer to ensuring secure identification documents for American citizens and legal residents only."

The Prevention of Unsafe Licensing Act amends the REAL ID Act passed by Congress in 2005, closing a loophole in the law that a state could use to provide state-issued identification cards to illegal immigrants. H.R. 4176 was introduced November 14, 2007 with the signatures of 156 Members of Congress as original cosponsors.
