Cubin Statement on SCHIP, Part II
U.S. Representative Barbara Cubin (WY-A/L) issued the following statement today after opposing the Democrats second attempt to greatly expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), H.R. 3963, the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007.
"The Democrats latest attempt to reauthorize the SCHIP demonstrates yet again that the Democratic Party's highest priority is not providing health insurance for low-income children, but expanding government at taxpayer's expense. Democrats have not removed one dollar from their massive $35 billion expansion of the SCHIP program which still makes government funded health insurance available to illegal aliens and families with annual incomes over $70,000.
"This bill was rewritten late last night by the Democratic leadership and brought to the House floor for a vote while many Members of the California delegation are back in their state due to the wildfires that swept parts of southern California. The Democrats skirted the legislative process altogether by not holding a single Congressional hearing nor markup. The Administration is willing to negotiate. House Republicans are willing to negotiate. House Democrats, however, continue to refuse to negotiate. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to put politics aside and work together to pass a socially and fiscally responsible bill that ensures low-income children get the critical health care they need."
