Rogers: Parents Can Stop Internet Predators

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, MI-08, is hosting three special programs for parents to help them keep children safe from predators roaming the Internet in search of young victims.

The first of three training sessions featuring cyber crime experts from the FBI, the sheriff's departments, Hamburg Police, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is scheduled for tonight at Pinckney. Two others are set for next Monday, November 19, in Lansing, and Tuesday, November 20 in Clarkston.

"On-line predators are targeting our children and using the anonymity of the cyber-world to victimize millions of them," Rogers said. "As the father of two, I am well aware of how much our children enjoy the ability to find information, do their homework, and talk with friends or play games on the computer. Sadly, there are very sophisticated criminals who have learned how to use the same computers and communications technology to get at our children in ways that are both shocking and frightening.

"As parents, we are the first line of defense against the predators and the harm they do to our children. That's why I think it is important to bring these experts together to help train parents in how to recognize the danger signs, how to report concerns to authorities, and most important, how to keep their children safe from these dangerous criminals. "

Rogers is bringing experts from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and three different sheriffs' departments - Livingston, Ingham and Oakland. All area parents are invited to attend any of these free informational programs and learn about the best tools for keeping their children safe in the cyber-world.
