Statement By Congressman Brian Higgins on the Proposal to Issue Drivers Licenses to Illegal Immigrants

I do not support the proposal to issues drivers' licenses to illegal immigrants. The government cannot issue legal documents which fundamentally legitimize illegal behavior. We should be working toward an enhanced drivers' license, which includes a person's country of origin, and allows for a passport alternative with the electronic information technology to provide for safe and efficient travel between nations. The federal government must work toward comprehensive immigration reform that streamlines the frustrating, bureaucratic process that often takes many years and creates a better way for immigrants to safely and legally live the American Dream.
