CROWLEY APPLAUDS PASSAGE OF LEGISLATION CONGRATULATING ISRAEL'S FIRST APPOINTMENT TO HEAD UN COMMITTEE

Today, Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens & the Bronx), a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, hailed House passage of a resolution commending Israel for chairing a United Nations committee for the first time in history. A co-sponsor of H. Res. 624, Congressman Crowley sees the appointment of Israel to chair the UN Committee on Program and Coordination (CPC) as a significant expansion of nation's role in the United Nations.

"Today, the House of Representatives commended Israel for its historic appointment to chair a key committee at the United Nations," Crowley said. "For far too long, Israel has been considered a second class member of the United Nations, subjected to unfair vilification by other member nations. This is a great opportunity for Israel. It is a hopeful signal that a shift in thinking has occurred at the United Nations - one that will lead to a greater role for Israel at the international body.

"I am proud to be joined by my fellow members in Congress in applauding Israel's appointment to chair UN Committee on Program and Coordination and I urge Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to work to ensure that Israel can fully participate in the business of the United Nations."
