INCREASED RAIL SAFTEY "A MUST" FOR IL-6 RESIDENTS
Washington, Oct 17 - Congressman Peter J. Roskam (R-IL) today issued the following statement after passage of H.R. 2095, the Federal Railroad Safety Improvement Act of 2007:
"My constituents know the importance of railroad safety. Chicagoland is the rail hub of the nation with more than 1,200 trains passing through it daily carrying 75 percent of the nation's freight. Our families face enough pressures todaythey don't need the added worry over the safety of the rail line running through their backyards.
"This legislation will increase safety by, among other things, giving train crews greater labor protections, reducing fatigue and human error, enhancing grade crossings, increasing penalties for safety violations and increasing the number of safety inspectors.
"Railroads are important to our local businesses and jobs, and this legislation will only enhance the safety of our lives around the railroads. I will continue to be a tireless advocate for improved rail safety."
