Rep. Miller: Vietnam War Memorial Vandals "Cowardly"

WASHINGTON—U.S. Representative Candice Miller today cosponsored a resolution that would condemn the recent anonymous vandalism of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC. Miller released the following statement:

"I am outraged that cowardly individuals have defaced the Vietnam War Memorial," Miller said. "The memorial represents the more than 2.7 million men and women who served, died, and remain missing in the service of their country. I cannot begin to comprehend the sorrow of the families and loved ones of those whose names have been destroyed because of this act of senseless vandalism."

Miller continued, "A disgusted America watched as cowards spat on our soldiers when they returned from Vietnam in the 1970's and this recent defacing is like spitting on our soldiers all over again, except these soldiers are never coming home. I am outraged and ashamed that we live in a country where cowards feel it is permissible to dishonor the men and women in uniform that fought and died for the freedom they enjoy. Our fallen heroes deserve honor, not disrespect. And those veterans who returned home deserve our welcome and our everlasting gratitude."

The Vietnam War Memorial was reported as vandalized on September 7, 2007. The National Park Service says that the damage is being repaired and a full investigation is ongoing. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which built the Wall, is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
