FOX News Channel Interview on Raids on Illegal Immigrants

MS. KELLY: And joining us now, as I mentioned, is Congressman Peter King. This is his district. And, you know, there is a lot of controversy over it. That's his side of the story, Congressman. As you know, there is another side to the story, which is there is also finger-pointing about what the ICE agents were wearing, that some had cowboy hats. And some do feel that the commissioner does have a problem with the illegals being rounded up, even though he says, no, he doesn't.

REP. KING: Well, first of all, I have a great regard for Commissioner Mulvey and the Nassau County Police Department. Having said that, there are some real issues here. For instance, I discussed this in detail with the Suffolk County Police Commissioner. And his raids were conducted almost simultaneously. He said it was totally professional, that the Suffolk County Police are ready to this again tomorrow if they could, and that ICE acted totally professionally and everything was done according to plans.

Also, the first raid was carried out last Monday the 24th, and then Wednesday the 26th, both of them in Nassau County. And there were no complaints by the Nassau Police after the Monday or Wednesday to ICE. In fact, I've been told by ICE, this we have to check out, that the Nassau Police actually wanted to use a SWAT team with ICE in a raid that was coming up that Friday night. That's how pleased they were in what was happening. And then suddenly on Thursday, Commissioner Mulvey called ICE. So I don't know why if there was such a problem on Monday or Wednesday, it took until Thursday for the police commissioner to say something.

MS. KELLY: Well, let me ask that. What do you think this is about?

REP. KING: I don't know. I mean, I hope there's no politics involved here. But, you know, does the numbers -- and, you know, they talk about only six or eight gang members. The fact is there was well over 100 gang associates. And also, 59 of those who were picked up actually have criminal records. These are all illegal immigrants.

I believe the American people, certainly my constituents on Long Island, they --- this is the type of cooperation they want. You have the federal officials working with local police locking up gang members, and if there's illegals in that facility or in that home and they're apprehended, then you take them in also. They're associated with those gang members, though.

I mean, you can't have it both ways. You can't say the federal government is not doing enough when it comes to going after illegal immigration, going after gang members, and then criticize them when they do. And again, as far as the tactics of ICE, obviously, you have to look into that. But when Suffolk County says that ICE acted 100 percent professionally, you know, and, again, these raids were being done simultaneously.

MS. KELLY: Right, there was no problem there.

REP. KING: Why would it be professional in Suffolk and not in Nassau?

MS. KELLY: Indeed, that appears to be the question of the morning. Congressman Peter King, thanks so much for your insights on it. We appreciate you ---

REP. KING: Thank you, Megyn.

END.
