Congresswoman Hirono Named to Small Business Committee
Request to Serve on Additional Committee Granted
WASHINGTON, D.C. Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono has been selected by leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives to fill a vacant spot on the Small Business Committee.
"Serving on the Small Business Committee will enable me to better assist small businesses and entrepreneurs in Hawaii, including supporting our burgeoning tech industry and Native Hawaiian businesses, and to be a greater voice on behalf of small businesses that are vital to our economy," said Congresswoman Hirono.
Congresswoman Hirono made a special request to serve on the Small Business Committee because she understands the importance of small businesses in Hawaii and nationwide. Typically, Representatives are limited to membership on two committees. Congresswoman Hirono received a waiver to serve on a third. She also serves on the Education and Labor Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
The Small Business Committee proposes and evaluates legislation that affects small businesses, and also oversees the Small Business Administration, which provides support for small businesses throughout their development. Recently, the Committee supported funding to assist entrepreneurs to enter and expand in global markets, which are often dominated by corporate giants. The Committee's jurisdiction spans a myriad of issues, including addressing the high cost of insurance, making affordable loans available and offering disaster assistance.
As a member of the Small Business Committee, Congresswoman Hirono will continue to advocate for small businesses as she did while serving as Lieutenant Governor when she spearheaded the creation of the Hawaii Mutual Insurance Company (HEMIC) to help small businesses purchase workers compensation insurance. She also chaired the first-ever Governor's Task Force on Science and Technology, bringing together representatives from both the private and public sectors to focus on the role of technology in Hawaii's future.
Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez, Chairwoman of the Small Business Committee, said, "I am pleased to welcome Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono to the Small Business Committee. She has been a strong advocate for small businesses in Hawaii during her years of public service as a state legislator and as Lieutenant Governor, and I look forward to working with her on behalf of small businesses in Congress."
Congressman Steny Hoyer, the House Majority Leader, advocated for Congresswoman Hirono's appointment to the Committee. He said, "I would like to congratulate Rep. Hirono on her selection to serve on the Small Business Committee. I am certain that she will be an energetic and effective member of this important committee, benefiting not just the businesses in her district but around the country. Democrats know that small businesses are the engine of our economy, and Rep. Hirono will help ensure that Congress plays a positive role in fostering the success of America's small businesses."
