Alexander Tapped to Join Congressional Delegation on Trip to Explore Trade Issues

WASHINGTON, D.C.- U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez has invited U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, to join a U.S. Delegation on a trip to Panama, Peru and Columbia September 12 -15 to discuss pending trade agreements with the United States and to meet with government, business, labor and civil society officials on the role these agreements play in promoting positive social change and economic growth and opportunity.

Alexander said Sec. Gutierrez expressed interest in the potential for economic growth through increased trade in the 5th Congressional District of Louisiana after his visit to the region in December 2005. During his visit, Sec. Gutierrez toured the Monroe/West Monroe Port project, and he also addressed the Monroe and West Monroe Chambers of Commerce.

"As the global market continues to expand, we have to make sure that the 5th District is economically linked to the rest of the world," Alexander said. "The potential for increased exports from Louisiana would translate into job growth and economic development in the near future."
