Ros-Lehtinen Speaks Out Against Pro-Drilling Provisions

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a senior Member of the Florida Delegation and staunch opponent of offshore drilling, issued the following statement on amendments offered to H.R. 3221 - "New Direction for Energy Independence, National Security, and Consumer Protection Act." The amendments are waiting approval by the Rules Committee.

"Here we go again. I am severely disappointed on the recent legislative efforts to threaten Florida's economy and fragile marine ecosystem by lifting the longstanding moratorium on natural gas drilling. These amendments stand in the face of efforts taken by the Congress to preserve and protect our marine habitats.

I am privileged to represent the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, home to one of the largest coral reef systems in the world. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to ensure that our marine sanctuaries are protected and preserved for future generations. Let's hope my colleagues in the Rules Committee have the sense to vote these amendments down."

Amendments were offered by Reps. John Peterson (R-PA) and Joe Barton (R-TX). Both amendments would allow offshore drilling for natural gas as close as 100 miles from the coastline.
