ENGEL VOTES TO BLOCK FAA OVERFLIGHTS

Congressman Eliot Engel Tuesday (7/24) voted for an amendment that would have cut off funding for the Federal Aviation Administration's implementing the New York/New Jersey/ Philadelphia Airspace Redesign project.

Rep. Engel said, "The FAA has not done an adequate job in assessing the impact of the rerouting on the people who will be directly affected. For example, the FAA ignored the effect the rerouting would have on Rockland County, whose residents recently discovered they would have upwards of 600 planes a day flying over their homes.

"They argue that the plan has taken nine years to get to where it is. But I say they should take a little more time to get it right. That's the better way."

The amendment was introduced by Rep. James Frelinghuysen of New Jersey, whose district is also impacted by the rerouting. It failed by a vote of 360-65.
