COSTELLO STATEMENT ON TSA INTENT REGARDING AIRLINE CARGO ON PASSENGER PLANES

Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL), Chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee, today issued the following statement regarding recent reports that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will not follow the intent of Congress regarding the screening of cargo on passenger airplanes:

"It is unacceptable that the TSA, which has three years to implement the cargo screening provision that is part of the 9/11 Commission Report Implementation Act, has already indicated that it will not meet the threshold that the Congress intended. I believe that the Congress' intent was clear, that cargo loaded on to passenger planes must be screened as passenger luggage is, by either a manual inspection or x-ray. A ‘certified shippers' program does not meet this standard. I will work with my colleagues and the TSA as these new procedures are finalized, but again stress that we need a regime that truly reflects the intent of the legislation. The traveling public expects nothing less."
