Clark Clemency

Little Rock -- Jan. 16 -- Gov. Mike Huckabee issued the following statement Friday afternoon: "Today I've given a notice of intent to grant a pardon to Steve Clark for his felony conviction. I made my decision after thoughtful consideration of the favorable recommendation he received from the state Post Prison Transfer Board. Steve Clark has experienced public humiliation, bankruptcy and criminal penalties for his acts of deception and theft.

Though his bankruptcy would have given him a legal basis to default on his payment to the state, he has gone beyond what he had to do legally. He has done what he should do morally and fully paid the fine, court costs and restitution at a cost of $18,484. A pardon will allow him to earn a living as a teacher and rebuild his clearly broken life. The state achieves no benefit from continuing punishment in this case. That's why I've decided to accept the recommendation of the board and grant this pardon. I hope this will bring an end to a long, painful chapter in our state's political history and demonstrate that consideration for clemency should be extended when merited without regard to party politics."
