The Honorable Elaine L. Chao
Secretary of Labor
United States Department of Labor
200 Constitution Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20210
Dear Secretary Chao:
It has come to my attention that Weavexx Corporation (Weavexx) of Farmville, Virginia has filed a Petition with the United States Department of Labor for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and for the Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance (ATTA) Older Workers Program and other emergency benefits.
Weavexx will begin phasing out its Press Felt Plant in Farmville on April 30, 2004, eventually permanently laying off all 116 current employees. The affected employees do not have bumping rights and are not represented by a union.
The loss of employment is directly related to the impact of the export of jobs to a foreign country. It is vitally important to provide for all Weavexx employees affected by the permanent closing of this facility.
As I am very concerned for the wellbeing of the Virginians affected by this closing, I would appreciate every consideration for approval of these requests. Please keep my office informed as to the progress and ultimate result of this request for Trade Adjustment Assistance and for the Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance Older Workers Program and other emergency benefits for the Weavexx employees.
With warm regards, I remain
