CARDIN, MIKULSKI ANNOUNCE FUNDS TO UPGRADE TECHNOLOGY IN WASHINGTON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Senators Benjamin L. Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-Md.) today announced the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded $55,000 to Washington County Public Schools that will fund the Boonsboro Campus Technology Infrastructure Modernization project. The project will provide computers and upgraded technology to students from three schools in Boonsboro, Md.

"This is a federal investment in Western Maryland communities today and tomorrow. It is so important to give our children to tools they need to succeed in the 21st century. This funding will improve access to technology for students in Washington County," said Senator Mikulski. "I will continue to fight to keep Western Maryland and education a priority in the federal checkbook."

"Education must be our nation's number one priority," said Senator Cardin. "Maryland employers have made it clear to me that we need to do more to provide our students with the computer and technical skills they need. This ARC grant will provide approximately 2,250 Washington County students with the training and skills they will need when they enter the workforce."

Washington County Public Schools will use its $55,000 to install 2,300 feet of fiber optic cable and acquire 100 desktop computers, as well as routers, switches and other electronic equipment that will be used by three K-12 schools in Boonsboro. More than 2,250 students will benefit from the equipment and improved educational programming. In addition to ARC funds, local sources will provide $129,000 for the project, bringing the total funding for the development project to $184,000.

The ARC is a federal-state partnership that works with the people of Appalachia to create opportunities for self-sustaining economic development and improved quality of life.
