GOODLATTE ANNOUNCES $150,000 FOR GEORGE C. MARSHALL MUSEUM

Today Congressman Bob Goodlatte announced that the House of Representatives approved $150,000 for the George C. Marshall Museum located at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington. The funding was included in the FY 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations Act, which passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 276-140.

George C. Marshall, a graduate of VMI, was the Army Chief of Staff during World War II and a key advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Marshall designed Operation Overlord, the Allied victory over Germany and Italy. Later as Secretary of State, George Marshall developed the Marshall Plan, the U.S. plan for rebuilding post World War II Europe. Marshall went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the Marshall Plan and his service during World War II.

The George C. Marshall Foundation will use this funding to expand the research programs at the Marshall Museum. These programs contribute to the ongoing dialogue on international economic development, peace through economic prosperity and contemporary post-conflict reconstruction. Research produced by these programs will augment the body of resources tapped by scholars, historians, military leaders, politicians, policy makers and public intellectuals.

"George C. Marshall was a true American patriot," Goodlatte said. "I am pleased that we were able to secure this important funding for the Marshall Museum. This funding will enable future generations to continue learning about George Marshall's dedication to our country and freedom around the world."

The FY 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations Act will now be referred to the U.S. Senate for further consideration.
