KENNEDY ON THE SUPREME COURT DECISION TODAY

Today, Senator Edward M. Kennedy released the following statement in response to the decision made today by the Supreme Court.

"Today's decision turns back the clock on equality in our schools. Over fifty years ago, the Supreme Court held in Brown v. Board of Education that separate but equal has no place in public education. Since then, integration in public schools has helped children learn to interact as citizens of our common society, and improved educational opportunities for many students. Today's decision is false to Brown's promise of equality, making it far more difficult for local school boards to voluntarily bring students of different races together in the classroom. Fortunately, the Court's ruling does not entirely close the door on progress, and school districts must find a way to ensure that it continues."
