STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR NAPOLITANO ON SUPREME COURT RULING IN BENNETT V. NAPOLITANO

PHOENIX - Governor Janet Napolitano today released the following statement regarding the Arizona Supreme Court's ruling in Bennett v. Napolitano:

"I am grateful that the Supreme Court unanimously confirmed what I have believed since the special action was filed: this was an improperly pursued action. I worked very carefully to craft a responsible budget for 2004, which included several necessary line-item vetoes.

"The results of my vetoes are a 2004 budget that protects funding for K-12 education, health insurance for children living in poverty, emergency dental care for low-income seniors, and the arts.

"Now that we can put this court action behind us, I look forward to working with the Legislature in the coming months to pass a budget for next year that continues to strengthen Arizona."
