Kerry Applauds Rumored Closure of Guantanamo Bay Prison

Press Release

Date: June 21, 2007
Location: Washington, DC

Sen. John Kerry issued the following statement today, following reports that the White House and Pentagon were moving towards closing the Guantanamo Bay detainee facility. The President has steadfastly resisted calls from Sen. Kerry and others to close the much criticized detention camp, where roughly 380 alleged terrorists are now detained.

"If these reports are proved true, this is a long overdue step in removing the stain Guantanamo has left on our foreign policy," Kerry said. "It also goes a long way toward returning America's moral authority in the world, and addressing the mistakes which have set us back in the fight against terrorism."

The Guantanamo Bay prison was built in 2002 to hold terror suspects captured in military operations.
