Boehner Statement on Democrats Forcing Taxpayers to Subsidize Abortions in Foreign Countries
House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today released the following statement opposing the State / Foreign Ops appropriations bill (H.R. 2764) after House Democrats voted to use taxpayer funding to subsidize organizations that promote and provide abortions in foreign countries:
"This bill represents an unconscionable policy reversal that dramatically weakens current pro-life policies. Combined with the billions of dollars in excessive spending, the Democrats' vote to undermine life makes it impossible for me to support the underlying bill. I look forward to the President's veto.
"I'm proud to have supported the bipartisan Smith-Stupak amendment. Had it been approved, it would have preserved our current pro-life policies and protected taxpayers from being forced to export abortion overseas.
"It is sad that the majority seems to think American taxpayers should be subsidizing abortions in foreign countries. Is this the sort of thing Democrats had in mind when they voted for the largest tax hike in history? My colleagues on the other side are walking a bizarre tight rope, claiming on one hand that they are trying to reduce the number of abortions abroad while at the same time pouring resources into organizations that perform and promote them. They can't have it both ways."
