Kerry Praises Measure Helping Iraqi & Afghani Translators Who Assisted US Military Forces
Senator John Kerry issued the following statement today, after President Bush signed legislation into law, permitting people from Iraq and Afghanistan who helped U.S. military forces to immigrate to the United States.
"Many translators risk their lives every day helping American troops as they try to bring stability and peace to Iraq and Afghanistan," Kerry said. "While we have a long way to go in that region, I am proud to offer some small help to translators who risked their lives to help our troops. I thank Sen. Lugar and Sen. Kennedy for their work on this legislation."
The legislation provides for a temporary increase in the number of Iraqi and Afghani immigrants who can come to the United States, from 50 to 500.
