Capito Joins Immigration Reform Caucus

Frustrated by the ongoing Senate debate on legislation that would grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today announced her decision to join the House Immigration Reform Caucus (IRC).

"I was drawn to the House Immigration Reform Caucus after watching the Senate's ongoing debate of another amnesty bill," Rep. Capito said. "On this issue, we can clearly use history for guidance on what to do. Providing amnesty twenty years ago was supposed to stop illegal immigration, but only made it worse. We would be foolish to think providing another round of amnesty is somehow the right answer this time around."

Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-CA), Chairman of the IRC, said, "Rep. Capito understands the definition of the word 'illegal' and realizes that rewarding illegal immigrants with a path to citizenship is a recipe for disaster."

The IRC was created to initiate new immigration policy and to create a much-needed forum in Congress to address the problems created by illegal immigration. Most recently, the IRC has played a leading roll in highlighting the problems associated with the immigration plan currently being debated in the Senate. Rep. Capito, the 106th member of the IRC, is the only West Virginian in the caucus.

Bilbray added, "Rep. Capito has been a reliable voice in the fight to stop amnesty and increase security at our borders, and we are glad to welcome her to the IRC. Her dedication to the issue will assist the IRC's efforts as we work to stop the Kennedy-Bush bill."

Rep. Capito concluded, "I appreciate the leadership Congressman Bilbray has shown on the immigration issue, and look forward to working with him to ensure we increase security at our borders while not repeating the amnesty mistake of twenty years ago."
