Walden statement on one-year county payments deal
Congressman Greg Walden (R-Ore.) released the following statement regarding the deal struck between the House, Senate and White House on an emergency supplemental funding bill for the war in Iraq. The deal includes a one-year extension of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act (county payments).
"Two months ago, it was an outside chance at best to get a one-year extension for county payments. Two weeks ago the President promised to veto the funding because, in the eyes of the administration, it did not meet an emergency threshold. Today's news that a full one-year extension will be included in the final bill that the President signs is a tremendous accomplishment that should not go without notice.
"Am I disappointed that there isn't a multi-year solution in the supplemental? Absolutely. But I don't think it does any good for me or others to throw political rocks at the Democratic leadership when literally tomorrow we have to turn around and start working with them again on a long-term solution."
