Pelosi Statement on the Death of Former Congressman Parren Mitchell

Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of former Congressman Parren Mitchell:

"With the death of Congressman Parren Mitchell, our nation has lost one of its most fierce champions for justice and equality. Baltimore has lost one of its favorite sons.

"Growing up in Baltimore, the Mitchell family was revered in my home. Parren Mitchell, his brother Clarence, and indeed his entire family devoted their lives to ending racism and ensuring opportunity, and for that, we have all gained.

"It is a great testament to the leadership of Parren Mitchell that the organization he helped found - the Congressional Black Caucus - continues to serve as the conscience of the Congress and increase its ranks to the benefit of all Americans.

"I hope it is a comfort to the many people who loved Mr. Mitchell that so many people share their loss and are praying for them at this sad time."
