Local Steelworkers Rally for Richards-Brown Ticket
Members of several United Steelworkers locals in the Ashland area rallied in support of Kentucky House Speaker Jody Richards' campaign for Governor today. Richards was joined by local Steelworkers from Marathon-Ashland Petroleum and AK Steel, where he thanked the men and women of the locals for their support.
"Working men and women like you are the cornerstone of the Democratic Party. It is that support that will carry us to victory, and ensure that our commitment to working families is fulfilled," Richards said. "I am honored to have received your endorsement, and continue to fight for a better way of life for all Kentuckians."
Last month, the United Steelworkers of Kentucky voted to endorse the Jody Richards-John Y. Brown III ticket for Governor. In a statement from mid-February, the United Steelworkers declined to endorse Bruce Lunsford, saying " USW is very disappointed with the Lunsford/Stumbo team for trying to undermine trade union solidarity."
The rally is Richards' second visit to the Ashland area in the past three weeks. In late April, Richards was in Ashland to attend a forum for Democrats, hosted by the Greenup Co. Democratic Women's Club, as well as announce the endorsement of the Steelworkers. The rally is the kickoff of "Labor Week" for Richards. Throughout the week, Richards will meet with local unions of the Communication Workers of America, the United Mine Workers of America, and Teamsters.
