U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette Works for Immigration Reform
Chief Deputy Whip Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement today in recognition of marches across the nation in support of immigrant rights and comprehensive immigration reform.
"As the thousands of marchers in the streets across our nation demonstrated today, there are rising voices for Congress to address comprehensive immigration reform in our country. Our immigration laws and policies are clearly broken. What we need is not more hateful rhetoric but humane solutions which secure our borders and enforce the law while at the same time provide a legal way for people to come to the United States and work and for those already here to earn legal status."
"Today, I again spoke with the congressional leadership and pushed them to have comprehensive immigration reform considered by the full House by this summer. I am confident that the U.S. Congress will consider legislation I have cosponsored, H.R. 1645, the 'Security Through Regularized Immigration and a Vibrant Economy (STRIVE) Act of 2007.' This comprehensive and bipartisan immigration reform bill recognizes current economic and social realities and will improve our current dysfunctional immigration system."
"This unworkable immigration system has continued for far too long. It is high time Congress took action and under the new Democratic majority, we will."
