Braley Supports Timetable for Iraq Redeployment

Today, Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Waterloo) voted in favor of the House/Senate Conference Committee Report on the US Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and Iraq Accountability Act.

The legislation establishes a timetable for redeploying troops from Iraq and provides billions of dollars for troop readiness and veterans healthcare. President Bush has threatened to veto the bill.

"A new direction in Iraq is long overdue," Braley said. "This bill provides a new direction for Iraq by providing greater accountability and setting a timetable for redeploying our troops. Furthermore, this bill provides critical funding for our troops and our veterans.

"For the first time Congress is sending a clear message to the Iraqi people that the time has come for them to stand up and assume responsibility for their own country. The key security and political benchmarks established in this bill are the President's own.

"President Bush should reconsider his threat to veto this bill and should start listening to the will of the American people. If the President does follow through on his threat to veto the bill, he will be denying billions of dollars for our troops and veterans—and I believe the American people will hold him accountable for that."
