STEARNS APPLAUDS U.S. SUPREME COURT DECISION UPHOLDING BAN ON PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTIONS

"The U.S. Supreme Court decision today upholding the ban on partial birth abortion is a major step toward acknowledging the sanctity of human life," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala). "The gruesome procedure of partial birth abortion has been used as legal infanticide in our nation, it is a procedure in which an infant is partially removed from the birth canal and then killed prior to complete delivery."

Stearns joined in approving the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act in 2003, which was signed by the President. Six federal courts had ruled that this ban is an impermissible restriction on the constitutional right to an abortion. The Supreme Court upheld the ban by a 5 to 4 decision. Added Stearns, "Life is precious and deserves protection. We especially have an obligation to speak out for those without a voice."
