MARKEY CALLS FOR ALBERTO GONZALES TO RESIGN

Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA), a senior member of the House Homeland Security Committee, today released the following statement on Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez:

Rep. Markey said, "Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has offered differing and contradictory explanations regarding his role in the US attorney firings, and today's hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee has only underscored his loss of credibility.

"The Attorney General of the United States is this nation's chief law enforcement official, responsible for ensuring the fair and impartial administration of justice. While Mr. Gonzalez may serve at the pleasure of the President, he is accountable to the American public, not to Karl Rove or other partisan political operatives. The American public has lost its faith, patience and trust in Attorney General Gonzales, and so has the Congress. It is time for Attorney General Gonzales to resign."
