KENNEDY RESPONSE TO BUSH'S IMMIGRATION SPEECH
Today, Senator Edward M. Kennedy released the following statement in response to President Bush's immigration speech:
"President Bush did the right thing today by speaking out on the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform --- now what is needed is action. Everyone agrees that our system is broken and this is the year that it must be fixed. Senator Reid is leading the way in saying that he will schedule this important debate in May. The American people are demanding action and the Democrats are ready to deliver.
Only a bipartisan bill will become law. There is a lot of common ground, especially in the need to strengthen our borders and enforce our laws, though important differences remain to be resolved. Now what is needed is a good faith effort by all concerned to forge the right kind of compromise that honors our commitment to our security, our commitment to families, and our commitment to our humanity.
