Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen voted today for H.R. 1227, the Gulf Coast Hurricane Housing Recovery Act of 2007, which includes a provision to help restore Section 8 funding for communities affected by Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Ros-Lehtinen, along with her colleagues from South Florida, urged House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank to include this provision in the bill.
South Florida, which was severely impacted by Wilma, recently had cuts in the most recent Section 8 funding formula for FY 2007. The Gulf Coast Hurricane Housing Recovery Act rectifies these cuts.
Said Ros-Lehtinen, "I am pleased that we are headed in the right direction with House passage of this bill. I have worked to address Section 8 housing cuts and will continue my efforts to ensure that housing agencies in South Florida and the Florida Keys are fully funded in 2007 and beyond. These funds are crucial in addressing the lack of affordable housing which our community faces. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to approve this legislation as expeditiously as possible."
