Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on the vote by the House Appropriations Committee to approve the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans health, and Iraq Accountability Act. The bill passed by a 36 to 28 vote:
"Today's vote in the House Appropriations Committee on the Iraq war is a victory for the American people who want the Congress to do what the President has not: propose a plan to bring the war to an end. It is a victory for those who want our troops to have the equipment and training on which their lives depend, and a victory for those who believe that our nation must keep its promises to our wounded troops and veterans.
"Next week, Members of the House will have a choice: vote to continue the President's open-ended commitment to a war without end or vote to responsibly redeploy our troops based on performance benchmarks the President and the Iraqi government have already endorsed.
"The American people have sent a strong message that they want a new direction in Iraq. The Appropriations Committee heard that message today."
