Statement by Senator Mark Pryor on U.S. Attorneys

I am very pleased to learn the Bush administration has changed course and announced their support of the Leahy/Feinstein bill which restores and requires the transparent confirmation process for all U.S. attorneys. By bypassing the constitutional process, the President has cast a dark cloud over the process of replacing U.S. attorneys. The Senate confirmation process is vitally important to assuring that qualified individuals are selected for a position which requires the exercise of independence and judgment. This issue is larger than party affiliation or any single appointment, it is about our Constitution and the rule of law.
