Conrad Statement on Iraq Resolution
A bipartisan majority of the United States Senate voted today to take up a resolution supporting U.S. troops an opposing an escalation of the war in Iraq, but the procedural motion fell short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster by Republicans. The cloture vote fell, 56-34, or four votes short of the amount needed to end the filibuster.
Senator Kent Conrad, who cast his vote for cloture, issued the following statement:
"I do not believe we should send additional troops to referee what has essentially become a fight between Sunni and Shia -- a conflict that has been going on for nearly 1,400 years."
