Sessions Responds to State of the Union Address

U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-Dallas) issued the following statement in response to the President's State of the Union Address:

"Tonight, the President outlined a positive, pro-active agenda that will strengthen America at home and abroad.

"In his message to the American people, the President addressed specific domestic economic goals: balancing the budget through pro-growth policies and spending restraint; reforming entitlement programs to ensure their viability to future generations, and enacting earmark reform to ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.

"As a strong advocate for fiscal responsibility, I fully support these goals and I will work with my colleagues in Congress to implement conservative fiscal policy.

"Additionally, I applaud the President's domestic goals to make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and flexible with a standard healthcare tax deduction - a plan to make health insurance more consumer-focused to meet the needs of a dynamic, competitive economy.

"Energy independence is critical to our national and economic security, and I support the President's call to expand the use of renewable and alternative energy sources. To decrease foreign oil dependence, we must build market-based incentives and standards to increase cutting-edge technology and infrastructure for renewable and alternative energy.

"Tonight, the President reiterated his plan for addressing border security and immigration. While I fully support his border security initiatives and interior enforcement policies, I remain concerned with providing illegal immigrants with any path to citizenship. Providing a path to citizenship unjustly discourages and frustrates immigrants who are rightfully pursuing lawful permanent residency and naturalization through legal processes. Any reforms should create incentives for compliance with the law, rather than incentives for more illegal immigration.

"Finally, the President outlined foreign policy goals for diplomacy and peace abroad, including reinforcements for victory in Iraq.

"Clearly, the War in Iraq has tested the nation's resolve, but the President has reminded us that the consequences of failure would be grievous and far-reaching. I believe that Congress should support the request of military commanders for additional troops and implement military, political, and social benchmarks for success in Iraq with the President's new strategy.

"The War on Terror requires our continued dedication and preparedness, and I support the President's call for increasing the strength of our military with the addition of 92,000 soldiers and marines in the next five years.

"The President has outlined a dynamic, advanced agenda for our nation, and I look forward to working with him to meet domestic and international goals to ensure that America's best days lie ahead."
