Pelosi: Requiring Medicare Prescription Drug Negotiation Is a Resounding Victory for America's Seniors

Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the H.R. 4, the Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act of 2007, which requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices. The bill passed on the House floor today by a bipartisan vote of 255 to 170.

"Today's vote is a resounding victory for American's seniors over the special interests. This crucial legislation requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices on behalf of the more than 22 million Americans in Medicare prescription drug plans.

"As pharmaceutical companies reap record profits, it is clear that the President's flawed prescription drug plan is benefiting drug companies more than America's seniors and people with disabilities. With today's vote, a strong majority in the House stood behind the millions of Americans who are finding it more difficult to make ends meet under the weight of ever costlier prescription drugs. This is just the beginning of Democratic efforts to ensure that quality health care is accessible and affordable for the American people."
