FBI CHOOSES SALT LAKE CITY FOR REGIONAL LABORATORY

Washington - Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today announced that the FBI has selected Salt Lake City as the next location for a Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory.

"I want to commend Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller for selecting Salt Lake City as the location for the FBI's next Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory," stated Hatch.

"Utah law enforcement and the FBI have continued to work incredibly well together on many cases including the 2002 Winter Olympics," continued Hatch. "Today's announcement strengthens that relationship as a fine example of local, state and federal law enforcement working together for the sake of public safety. Utah's proven commitment to public safety and rich human resources make our state an ideal location for such an endeavor."

"Salt Lake City is already home to the FBI's Regional Translation Center which supports translation services for 13 languages, includes Arabic and Farsi," continued Hatch. "Having both the Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory and the Translation Center near each other will facilitate the FBI's efforts. For example, now computers seized in terrorism cases can be sent to Salt Lake City to have the digital information retrieved, translated and transmitted all in one location."
