Alliance for Retired Americans Endorses Whitehouse
Cites His Commitment to Provide Seniors A Secure, Dignified Retirement

Cranston, R.I. - Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Sheldon Whitehouse today received the endorsement of the Alliance for Retired Americans, who cited his commitment to work to keep America's promise to ensure seniors a secure and dignified retirement. Ed Coyle, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, announced the endorsement at a meeting of Rhode Island Alliance members.

"Your positions demonstrate a strong determination to improve the quality of life for older Americans," Coyle said.
"Your leadership on issues such as the need for a comprehensive prescription drug benefit program under Medicare that benefits seniors - not insurance and drug companies, the financial stability of the Social Security system, retirement and pension security, and quality long term and nursing home care all exhibit a commitment to America's seniors."

"It's time we have a leadership in Washington that will put our seniors first, not the pharmaceutical companies and the insurance companies and the lobbyists," Whitehouse said. "I'm humbled that the Alliance for Retired Americans has endorsed my campaign for change, and I look forward to working with them to preserve seniors' quality of life and protect vital programs, like Medicare and Social Security, on which so many seniors depend."

With three million retiree members nationwide, the Alliance for Retired Americans was founded in 2001 with the goal of ensuring social and economic justice and full civil rights for all citizens so they may enjoy lives of dignity, personal and family fulfillment and security. The Alliance aims to influence government through action on retiree legislative and political issues such as opposing tax breaks for the wealthy at the expense of programs that help seniors, privatizing Social Security and Medicare, and fighting for a prescription drug benefit under Medicare that is universal, comprehensive, affordable and voluntary.

With less than a week to go until Election Day, Whitehouse is strongly positioned for victory. Every independent poll released in the wake of the September 12th primary shows Whitehouse leading Chafee, with his message of change in Washington resonating throughout the state.
